On a morning in January 2010, I started my day like any other with meditation and prayer. Everything seemed fine except for a slight feeling of fatigue and weakness. I attributed the feeling to the onset of a cold or flu. I stopped at the pharmacy and purchased over-the-counter cold medicine to treat my symptoms. After a week’s time, when the symptoms persisted, I made a doctor’s appointment. The results of routine lab work changed my life forever.
In March 2010, I was diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML). CML is a cancer of the bone marrow and blood, and is one of four main types of leukemia. The first phase of treatment resulted in remission.A recent routine examination with my primary care physician revealed that the CML has recurred. Most CML patients are treated with daily oral drug therapy, and will require extensive medical treatment. My recurring symptoms are fevers, night sweats and excruciating bone and joint pains.
In addition, CML compromises the immune system, which has resulted in a myriad of compounded health issues. I am in need of knee replacement and reconstructive oral surgery. Although I do have health insurance, the medication is not covered because of the pre-existing condition clause with the insurance carrier. My work status as an independent contractor yields no additional health benefits.
The primary cancer drug prescribed, Tasigna, costs more than $10,000 a month, and monthly co-payments are thousands every month. I need your help! Your donation of any amount will help support my mounting medical expenses. All contributions are greatly needed, and sincerely appreciated.
